Verified carbon certificates by Norfolk Southern

Norfolk Southern has reported that it has introduced ‘RailGreen’, a certified programme allowing railfreight customers to reduce their supply chain emissions.

Developed with the ‘123Carbon’ emissions platform, ‘RailGreen’ issues third-party verified certificates linked to Norfolk Southern’s biofuel usage. According to Norfolk Southern “customers can purchase these certificates and apply them to their supply chain emissions,” while the railway invests further in low-carbon biofuels.

The process is secured via ‘blockchain-based environmental attribute certificates’, aiming for traceability and avoiding double counting. ‘RailGreen’ was designed to integrate operations in the company’s network.

“Rail is already the most sustainable way to transport goods over land. ‘RailGreen’ takes emissions savings to the next level,” said Ed Elkins, Norfolk Southern’s executive vice-president and chief commercial officer. (js)
