The Alliance and the Atlantic

Falling volumes are causing problems in the deployment of ultra large container ships (ULCS). The Alliance is now focusing on Asia and Northern Europe. In its estimation, the Asia-Northern Europe trade is regaining in importance.

Hapag-Lloyd, ONE, HMM and Yang Ming have thus decided to open a new chapter in their handling of Asian and Northern European traffic from April 2023 onwards. A series of ULCVs with more efficient drives and fewer emissions and an average of 23,500 teu will replace the current units with less capacity.

In return, vessels with a capacity of up to 15,000 teu are increasingly being deployed in the Asia-Mediterranean and US East Coast trades. (sh)
