Telp adds whale guidance
The Swedish Club has added 'right whale advice' to its trade enabling loss prevention programme (Telp), helping members meet Canadian and US rules aimed at protecting endangered whale species.
According to the company, vessel strikes remain a major cause of death for the endangered North Atlantic right whale, of which only a few hundred remain. Non-compliance with routing and speed limits risks fines, delays and reputational damage.
"By building right-whale advice into passage planning, Telp gives masters and bridge teams clear guidance on seasonal zones, speed limits, and routing measures," said Joakim Enström (pictured), senior loss prevention officer at the Swedish Club. The guidance also covers protection areas for killer whales off the Canadian west coast. Lorraine Hager, loss prevention and marketing advisor, said the step reflects industry expectations and supports safer, more sustainable shipping operations. (js)
