Scope 3 efficiency leaders

According to Oceanscore’s latest report, 'Scope 3 at Sea', MSC and OOCL are the most efficient carriers on the Asia–Northern Europe trade lane. Covering January to June 2025, the study shows that carrier choice can affect Scope 3 emissions exposure. MSC, with an 18% share of voyages, and OOCL, with 14%, combined scale with below-average carbon intensity, steadier speeds and consistent vessel utilisation. Their services also showed fewer extreme outliers, offering more predictable emissions performance.

"A well-utilised, fuel-efficient ship can emit far less per container than one that sails faster or emptier, even on the same route," said Thomas Smith, head of cargo solutions at Oceanscore. He added that while shippers cannot control operational decisions, voyage-level data helps them select carriers that minimise emissions and carbon costs. (js)
