Railfreight safety under review
On 26 June, the Swiss federal office of transport (Fot) hosted a round table with railfreight stakeholders in Bern, to discuss ways to improve safety in railfreight operations.
The talks followed the 2023 Gotthard base tunnel accident and aimed to identify short and long-term measures, such as tighter technical rules and additional wagon checks.
If EU-wide measures remain insufficient, Switzerland may adopt stricter national rules, including a potential ban on wagons with LL brake blocks, according to a media release from the Swiss government. Further discussions are planned for August, to agree on voluntary short-term risk-reduction measures. (js)
