Powerful hybrid locomotives to run in Brazil

Photo: Rumo

Rumo, Brazil’s largest railway operator, has taken delivery of two hybrid locomotives from Progress Rail. The EMD® GT38H will be the first hybrid units for cargo transport in revenue service. The locomotives use a diesel-electric system and battery packs, with energy to power the motors coming from the diesel generator and a bank of batteries.

It has a potential to reduce fuel consumption by up to 45%. Testing will take place over six months on the track between Guarapuava (PR) and the Desvio Ribas railway station in the region of Ponta Grossa (PR).

With the two hybrid locomotives, Rumo will haul the same payload with increased velocity as trains previously pulled by six locomotives. (ben)
