The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has expressed disappointment after the International Maritime Organization’s extraordinary session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC ES) in London failed to reach an agreement on a global Net-Zero Framework for shipping. The proposed framework would have introduced the world’s first carbon pricing mechanism for any industrial sector, providing a clear regulatory pathway for maritime decarbonisation according to ICS.

"We are disappointed that member states have not been able to agree a way forward at this meeting," said Thomas A. Kazakos, ICS secretary general. "Industry needs clarity to be able to make the investments needed to decarbonise the maritime sector, in line with the goals set out in the IMO GHG strategy," he added. (js)
