EmissionLink urges action to avoid ‘decarbonisation déjà vu’

EmissionLink has warned that shipowners risk “paying twice” as overlapping climate regulations create confusion and cost. While the IMO’s net-zero targets are set for 2027, the EU’s FuelEU Maritime rules are already in force, leading to concerns about duplicated reporting and penalties.

Philippos Ioulianou, the managing director of EmissionLink, a compliance solution developed by shipowners for shipowners and a part of the Columbia Group, highlights the financial and operational strain caused by diverging systems. He called for harmonisation and mutual recognition of emissions data between global and regional frameworks.

“We support decarbonisation, but regulation must reflect operational realities,” he said, underlining the fact that without regulatory alignment, shipowners may face years of redundant compliance, passing extra costs down the value chain.

EmissionLink, backed by the Columbia Group, offers guidance on emissions tracking and fuel strategy, aiming to turn compliance into competitive advantage. (gy)
