The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union (EU) are supporting the reconstruction of a 34 km stretch of railway between the port town Durres and the capital city Tirana in Albania.

It is the first major investment in the country’s railway sector in over 30 years and includes the construction of a new 5 km railway connection between Tirana’s city centre and Tirana International Airport. Once completed, the line will shorten travel times, alleviate traffic congestion, and reduce air pollution.

The reconstruction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The project is supported with a EUR 36.9 million EBRD loan and a EUR 35.5 million EU grant. (ben)
