Barcelona's throughput up to May 2020


Container and vehicle traffic were impacted by the pandemic.

The Port of Barcelona has published its figures for the first five months of the current year. Overall, freight traffic fell by 17.2%, totalling 23.75 million t of cargo. Containers recorded a 20% drop with almost 1,158,000 teu moved. With regards to imports, full containers fell by 11.9%, while full export containers declined by 2.2%.

 

Broken down to countries, in terms of exports China (59.6%), India (28.1%), Brazil (13.8%) and Turkey (10.1%) were the most dynamic markets in the first five months of the year. As for imports, trade with the United States (12.5%) and Indonesia (8.3%) remained positive.

 

The automotive sector shrunk by 45.8% or 188,000 units compared to the same period of 2019. In the bulk segment, solids remained at the level of the previous year, with a movement of more than 1,676,000 t (-0.3%). Liquids, with a total of 5,545,920 t handled, fell by 18.1%. (mw)
