An inland shipping first for Sweden

The first container barge shuttle service on Sweden’s inland waterways is in the pipeline. The barges will sail between Stockholm’s newly-opened Norvik Port and the port of Västerås.

The service will be operated by German shipping line Deymann, deploying the 208 teu barge ‘Emelie Deymann’ on Lake Mälaren for this purpose.

Ports of Stockholm said that it expects the undertaking to reduce road network congestion and substantially cut carbon dioxide emissions in the region. Services are expected to commence in May, with two sailings a week.

The service, known in the EU as the fifth mode of transport as it uses smaller inland waterway vessels, provides sustainable transport options to Sweden’s largest consumer region, with Stockholm Norvik Port the container terminal closest to the area.
