Alpine rail option to end earlier

Photo: RAlpin

RAlpin is set to discontinue its rolling motorway (ro-mo) by the end of 2025—three years earlier than planned.

Despite 80% capacity utilisation and ongoing federal financial support, increased rail network disruptions, especially in Germany, have rendered operations economically unviable. In Q1/2025 alone, 20% fewer trains ran than the year before, due to construction work. The decision follows mounting losses, with a CHF 2.2 million loss in 2024.

The Swiss government will raise per-lorry compensation until closure, while RAlpin’s shareholders (BLS, Hupac, SBB) will ensure funding for an orderly phase-out. RAlpin is now working to relocate staff and explore rail alternatives. (js)
