Sustainable shunting operations in Italy

Photo: Vossloh

Manufacturer Vossloh will deliver eight DE 18 locomotives to Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal, which is part of the FS Italiane group. The new shunting locomotives will be deployed by infrastructure manager RFI in the Strait of Messina (Sicilia, Italy) and for maintenance operations.

The 17 m long, 4 m high and 3 m wide DE 18s are equipped with systems for demand-based power optimisation. This means that they can also be used where the line is not electrified.

This loco model reduces pollutant emissions and fuel consumption. When operated with regenerative fuels such as HVO and, in future, PTX, it will minimise CO2 emissions by up to 95% for the same performance. (ben)
