Gothenburg opens new ro-ro service to Asia

A new ro-ro shipping service between the port of Gothenburg and Asia has commenced, offering direct connections to Chinese ports via Singapore. Operated by Cosco Shipping Specialised Carriers, it primarily transports Swedish export cars to Asia and Chinese vehicles to Scandinavia, with additional capacity for project cargo.

The monthly service is supported by new LNG-powered vessels that reduce CO2 emissions by 27% compared to conventional fuels. The ships, nearly 200 m long and with capacity for 7,500 vehicles, feature adjustable decks to accommodate diverse cargo types.

The direct route offers Swedish companies significant advantages, eliminating the need for transhipment or pre-transport to other ports, and aligns with the port’s focus on sustainable, efficient freight transport.

The port of Gothenburg, Scandinavia’s largest maritime gateway, plays a vital role in Swedish trade, handling 20% of the nation's foreign trade and more than 50% of its container traffic. (pb)
