First Traxx engine for Italian railfreight company

The Italian railfreight company Mercitalia has received the first of 40 Traxx electric locomotives ordered from Bombardier. The remaining 6.4 MW engines will be delivered by October 2019.
Mercitalia, a subsidiary of the Italian state railways FS, is investing about EUR 400 million in this project to renew a third of its locomotive fleet and increase its transport capacities. The Traxx locomotives are equipped with an eco-mode system that significantly reduces fuel consumption.
Bombardier’s engines are part of a contract signed in 2017 that includes the option of purchasing a further 20 locomotives for EUR 180 million. (ben)
