Fire safety needs real-time awareness
Vessel fires remain one of shipping’s costliest and fastest-growing risks, with Allianz reporting a decade-high number of incidents in 2024. Traditional safety measures – from suppression systems to manual roll calls – are proving insufficient on today’s larger, electrified vessels. Norwegian tech firm ScanReach argues that effective fire safety must combine suppression, detection and real-time crew visibility.
Its "ConnectPOB" system uses wireless mesh technology and wearable tags to track personnel during emergencies, even in zero-visibility conditions. The platform integrates with existing fire detection systems to enhance awareness, speed up mustering and provide audit-ready data. As regulators demand measurable readiness, ScanReach expects such connected solutions to become standard for vessel safety management. (ah)
