Combining rail and HVO trucks to reduce CO2

Swiss chemical logistics specialist Bertschi and Dow have developed a new transport solution combining intermodal rail and biofuel-engine trucks to significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

The pilot project involves the transport of Dow products from the Netherlands to a customer in Italy using an intermodal train and a specialised fleet of Bertschi trucks powered by hydrogenated vegetable oil fuel (HVO). Biofuel-engine yard shunters first load the cargo in Terneuzen.

The main leg to Italy is then carried out by intermodal rail, departing from Bertschi’s terminal near Dow’s plant. The last mile is then completed by a Bertschi biofuel-engine truck from the Italian intermodal terminal. (ben)
