In two overnight operations on 19 and 20 June, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Louisville intercepted five shipments containing 2,193 counterfeit jewellery items.

The seized goods included bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings falsely bearing Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels trademarks. All shipments originated from China or Hong Kong and were destined for addresses in Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina and Michigan.

According to CBP’s trade experts, the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of the goods — had they been genuine — would exceed USD 25 million. CBP warned that counterfeit goods harm consumers and legitimate businesses and often support organised crime. In FY 2024, China and Hong Kong accounted for 90% of all seizures related to intellectual property rights (IPR). Jewellery remains the top category in terms of value. (ah)
