Cape Town port boosts capacity with new RTGs
The Port of Cape Town has taken delivery of nine new rubber-tyred gantries (RTGs), marking a milestone in Transnet Port Terminals’ upgrade of the Cape Town Container Terminal. The state-of-the-art cranes, fitted with anti-sway technology, are already improving operations by lifting daily container throughput and reducing vessel and truck turnaround times.
Western Cape minister of agriculture, economic development and tourism, Ivan Meyer (right, with Dr Andile Sangqu, Chairman of the Board at Transnet), said the investment strengthens the port’s competitiveness and supports the region’s Growth for Jobs strategy. Assembly of a second batch of RTGs is under way, with a third already delivered, while refurbishment of ship-to-shore cranes will follow.
Transnet executives underlined the importance of sustained investment in port infrastructure to enhance South Africa’s standing in global performance indices and to unlock trade and economic growth. (ah)
