Maersk has named its ‘Berlin Maersk’, the first in a new class of 17,480 teu dual-fuel methanol containerships.

The vessel was named at Hyundai Heavy Industries’ yard in Ulsan (South Korea) in June and is entering Maersk’s AE3 Asia–Northern Europe service today, 7 July, with its maiden call at Shanghai.

The ‘Berlin Maersk’ is the 14th dual-fuel newbuilding in the company’s fleet and features a wider beam than the previous ‘Ane Maersk’ class, increasing its capacity and making it Maersk’s largest dual-fuel ship to date. Five more vessels in the series are due for delivery in 2025, all sailing under the Danish flag.

Maersk highlighted the design’s role in supporting decarbonisation and optimising operations. The new class builds on earlier innovations like the Laura Maersk and reflects the firm’s long-term strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
