Austria introduces intermodal training

Austria is set to close a long-standing gap in logistics education with the launch of its first structured training model for intermodal transport this autumn. Until now, neither universities nor vocational schools offered comprehensive content on the subject, despite repeated calls from experts.

Developed by the logistics association VNL with partners, the four-level scheme ranges from awareness to expert stage and is aimed at schools, universities and companies. "Intermodal is today not a self-explanatory term, but that must change – it unites ecological sustainability, better working conditions and lower external costs," said Kurt Leidinger, VNL board member.

Backed by the federal transport ministry and the Schieneninfrastruktur-Dienstleistungsgesellschaft mbH, the programme is designed to prepare specialists for sustainable supply chains while highlighting intermodal transport’s potential to cut CO₂ by up to 80%. (ah)
