Amtrak investing in facilities
Amtrak has launched three major rail yard modernisation projects along the northeast corridor, awarding design-build contracts for facilities in Boston, New York, and Washington DC. The upgrades will support the introduction of Amtrak’s new 'Airo' trains in 2027 and NextGen 'Acela' units, and aims at improving service reliability and maintenance efficiency.
The Boston Southampton yard project includes a new two-track maintenance facility and renovations to existing service sites, with completion set for 2029. At New York’s Sunnyside Yard (pictured), a joint venture will design and build new inspection and service halls, six service and cleaning tracks, consolidated employee areas, and track and interlocking reconfigurations, with work expected to be finished in 2030. Washington’s Ivy City Yard will see three new service tracks, upgraded maintenance halls, and new water infrastructure. (js)
