11,400 truck journeys shifted to rail

In Austria, the amended Waste Management Act (AWG) has been in force since the beginning of 2023. This law stipulates that waste transports with a total weight of more than 10 t and a distance of 300 km or more must be transported by rail.

An initial assessment by ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) Railcargo shows: 200,000 t that were previously transported by truck have been shifted to rail as a result of the AWG. This corresponds to more than 11,400 truck journeys. If the vehicles were to be lined up from Vienna, there would be a 200 km long traffic jam on the motorway all the way to Graz. (ben)
