Wärtsilä: first ammonia-fuelled ship project

Photo: Wärtsilä

Wärtsilä has partnered with Norwegian shipowner Eidesvik to convert the "Viking Energy", an offshore platform supply vessel, to run on ammonia fuel, making it the world's first in-service ammonia-fuelled ship.

Scheduled for conversion in early 2026, the project, co-funded by the Horizon Europe programme, aims to demonstrate the viability of sustainable fuels in cutting shipping emissions.

This partnership reflects the commitment of Wärtsilä, Eidesvik, and Equinor, a Norwegian state-owned multinational energy company, to decarbonisation, with ammonia seen as a key solution to achieving net-zero emissions in the maritime industry by mid-century. (pb)
