Economic challenges in Europe and geopolitical issues worldwide continue to impact business at the port of Hamburg. Nevertheless, the port saw its bulk cargo throughput growing by 7.7% to 19 million t, while general cargo declined by 11.1% to 39.2 million t in H1/2023.

Terminal operators processed 58.2 million t, down 5.8% yoy. Container handling showed improvement, rising 4.6% in H1/2923, with June handling 10.2% higher volumes than January. Positive trends were observed in bulk cargo sectors and trade with North America and Asia.

The port perceives a trend towards larger container ships and is aiming for climate neutrality. In the present circumstances, the outlook however remains uncertain. (pb)
