The Japanese conglomerate of container shipping, Ocean Network Express (ONE), has just announced the award of approval in principle (AiP) for an ammonia dual-fuelled vessel. Along with its investment in twelve methanol dual-fuelled vessels, the carrier considers this to be "another milestone on its journey towards net-zero by 2050."

The newly designed 3,500 teu vessel was jointly developed by ONE, Nihon Shipyard (NSY) and the classification society DNV. The project dates back to late 2022. ONE has been studying the feasibility of ammonia as an alternative fuel for zero emission according to the roadmap for alternative fuels since 2022.

In conjunction with the roadmap, the carrier participated in a GCMD-led ammonia bunkering pilot safety study. Ocean Network Express (ONE) was created on 7 July 2017 following the integration of the liner services of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K LINE), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK).
