Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts) and Marivation have launched 'Sidas' (Smart infrastructure for digitalisation and safety), a digital assistance system that aims to enhance vessel manoeuvring safety at the port of Cuxhaven. Building on the 'SmartKai project', the system creates real-time visualisations of ship positions using 'LiDAR', radar and environmental sensors capturing wind, current and wind data as the company reported. "In the 'SmartKai' project, we recognised the benefits of a docking assistance system for us," said NPorts project manager Jürgen Höpcke.

Upgraded with a fibre-optic network, more powerful sensors and compact design, Sidas aims to reduce power use from 250W to 30W and detects objects up to 250 metres away. Fixed electronic optics replace rotating mirrors. The system also logs every manoeuvre, providing reports in case of an incident. (js)
