Japanese shipowner Nissen Kaiun has acquired a stake in Dutch wind-assist specialist Econowind, underlining growing interest in fuel-neutral propulsion as the company reported. The Imabari-based company said it selected Econowind for its technology. "Making shipping more sustainable is a top priority," a Nissen Kaiun spokesperson noted, adding that the company is considering installing the larger version of 'Ventofoils' on its vessels.

More than 150 units of Econowind’s wing-shaped devices have been sold worldwide across shortsea and deepsea markets. CEO Daan Koornneef said the partnership supports further development of larger units and may lead to production opportunities in Asia. He added that Nissen Kaiun’s regional network makes it an ideal shareholder as Econowind looks to expand its presence and accelerate deployment of larger units. (js)
