MSC keeping up the pace

MSC is expanding its capacity in container shipping at breath-taking speed. Besides charters and the acquisition of used vessels, the carrier's orderbook currently is close to the threshold of 2 million teu.

About 1.96 million teu are currently being built on behalf of the Swiss shipping company on a global scale. This is equivalent to about 43% of the company’s current global fleet, Linerlytica says.

In comparison, MSC's orderbook is larger than the combined orderbooks of the carriers Maersk, CMA CGM and Cosco. The bulk of deliveries is expected in 2023 and 2024.

Furthermore, MSC purchased around 240 second-hand ships over the last two years, according to Alphaliner. On a global scale, all newbuilds of all carriers accumulate to around 7.2 million teu in 2022, well above the previous 6.6 million teu mark recorded in 2008. (sh)
