Last month, the foundation stone was laid for the expansion of the airport of Conakry (CKY), the capital of Guinea. The official ceremony was made possible by a 25 year concession which was awarded, in February this year, to the Société de gestion de l'aéroport de Gbessia (Sogeac), in which Guinea (34%), Africa50 (33%) and the Parisian airport operator Groupe ADP (33%) each hold a share.

The first project phase will cost EUR 120 million, which will be invested, among others, into a modern freight terminal that is intended to quadruple the capacity of the existing 2,000 sqm facility.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, analysts forecast that Africa’s air cargo volumes would increase two-fold by 2031. According to Iata, the airlines of this continent, home to 17% of the world’s population, currently account for only 1.8% of global air cargo traffic. (ah)
