According to an online newspaper under the control of the state of China the country has inaugurated the world’s tallest bridge in the southwestern province of Guizhou, where the new 'Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge' now towers 625 m above the Beipan River. The steel truss girder suspension bridge, which took three years to complete, cuts travel time across the canyon from two hours to just two minutes.

With a total length of 2,890 m and a main span of 1,420 m, the 'Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge' has also become the world’s longest-span steel truss girder suspension bridge in mountainous terrain, according to Guizhou authorities. The structure spans what is locally known as the 'Earth’s crack'. According to the newspaper Guizhou has built more than 30,000 bridges in recent decades, including three of the world’s tallest. (js)
