CCTV rules at Indian ports
India has introduced new rules requiring closed-circuit television systems (CCTV) on domestic and international vessels calling at its ports, a move welcomed by the UK-based safety technology firm Zelim.
The directorate general of shipping now mandates CCTV installation on Indian-flagged ships of 500 gt or more, with compliance due by February 2028 or the next classification renewal survey. It also recommends CCTV on foreign-flagged ships of similar size entering Indian ports.
According to Zelim the regulation follows incidents such as crew disappearances and collisions where the absence of situational awareness hampered emergency response or resulted in accidents. Zelim said the decision sets an example for other IMO member states and argued that combining CCTV with AI-enabled monitoring can deter crime, improve real-time response and provide evidence for investigations.
