A silver lining in Virginia

Barge traffic saw an upswing in the Port of Virginia.

The Port of Virginia’s cargo streams slowed down significantly in May due to the impact of the pandemic: the number of cargo handled decreased by more than 59,000 teu in comparison to the same period in 2019. The total amount of teu handled was 202,000, a drop of 22.6% compared to May 2019.

Nevertheless, the volumes moved by barge grew by 3.4% and cargo handled at Richmond Marine Terminal surged by 24%.

The port continues to work on the expansion of Norfolk International Terminal’s south-side container stack yard, which will be completed in the second half of 2020.

The dredging of the channel project and the Orsted’s offshore-wind project at Portsmouth Marine Terminal (PMT) are running ahead of schedule. (mw)
