Dutch solar tech hits sea

Dutch maritime solar specialist Wattlab has completed the first full-scale installation of its 'solar flatrack system' on the 'MV Vertom Tula', a 7,280 dwt diesel-electric cargo ship owned by Vertom. Equipped with 44 solar flatracks totalling 79 kWp, the vessel is the first seagoing ship to generate solar power with the system. Following two pilot projects, Vertom chose to fully integrate the technology on its newbuild to advance sustainable operations across its over 100-strong shortsea fleet as Wattlab reported.

The panels were produced and assembled in Rotterdam and installed in Harlingen within one day using container twist-lock fittings. "For shipowners, time is money, so speed and ease of use are important," said Wattlab CEO Bo Salet. "Furthermore, we know that ‘space is money’ too," he added, noting that the panels can be stacked on a single 20 ft container footprint when removed. (js)
