Metoki and Osvald re-elected to lead UPU
Japan’s Masahiko Metoki (left) has been re-elected by acclamation as Director General of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), while Slovenia’s Marjan Osvald was confirmed for a second mandate as Deputy Director General with 99 votes. Their new four-year terms begin on 1 January 2026 and run until the end of 2029. The decision, taken at the UPU Congress in Dubai on 18 September, ensures continuity at the UN agency responsible for international postal cooperation.
Metoki, who has led the UPU since 2021, previously headed international affairs at Japan Post and chaired the UPU’s Postal Operations Council. Osvald, with more than two decades of experience in operations and strategy, joined the leadership in 2022 after serving as Senior Adviser at the Post of Slovenia. Their re-election underscores the sector’s emphasis on stability and consensus in addressing challenges ranging from digitalisation to cross-border e-commerce. (ah)
