International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) plans to invest R$948 million to expand and modernise the Rio Brasil Terminal at the port of Rio de Janeiro between 2025 and 2029. According to ICTSI the project will increase annual capacity by 70.5%, from 440,000 to 750,000 teu, aiming to strengthen the port’s role as a logistics hub for Brazil’s southeast and midwest regions. The investment includes infrastructure upgrades, expanded storage yards, new container-handling equipment, and enhanced electrical, digital and automation systems.

The terminal will be adapted to handle new Panamax and post-Panamax vessels of up to 366 m loa and more than 13,000 teu. New cranes and yard capacity are expected to arrive from mid-2026. "In Brazil, we are focused on bringing the highest international standards of operational efficiency and technological development to our operations", said Anders Kjeldsen, ICTSI's Vice President for the Americas.
