Half of boxship order book geared for alternative fuels
As of end August, 534 containerships on order are designed to run on alternative fuels, according to Bimco. These vessels represent 53% of the order book by number and 77% by teu capacity. By 2030, the fleet could reach 837 alternatively fuelled ships with a combined 10.9m teu, accounting for over a quarter of global capacity.
Alternative fuels are particularly popular for the largest ships: in the 8,000 teu+ segment, 81% of vessels and 85% of capacity on order will be alternatively fuelled. LNG dominates with two-thirds of orders, while methanol accounts for 31%. By contrast, uptake in bulkers and tankers remains limited at below 20%.
Chief shipping analyst Niels Rasmussen noted that fuel availability remains a challenge, with LNG chosen for its wider supply footprint. (ah)
