Biofuel transport across the Baltic

Valio now ships its dairy products from Finland to Sweden using fossil-free maritime transport on Viking Line’s "Viking Glory" and "Viking Grace". The ferries run on liquefied biogas made from waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by around 90% compared to fossil fuels. The move supports Valio’s goal of achieving a fully carbon-neutral milk chain by 2035.

Viking Line’s Freight Director Harri Tamminen called the shift a practical example of the green transition in shipping. Valio maintained 24/7 logistics during the peak season and sees the biofuel link as a key milestone in emission reduction.

Alongside Valio, Orkla also uses Viking Line’s biogas option for shipping Felix ketchup. Viking Line passengers can likewise offset emissions with biogas. Ports of Turku and Stockholm are partners in developing a green corridor, as 90% of Finland–Sweden freight moves by sea. (ah)
