Alpine truck law suspended
The Swiss government has decided not to implement the revised road traffic law (Art. 45a SVG), which was based on an initiative from the canton of Ticino entitled ‘Safer roads – now!’ (Sicherere Strassen jetzt!).
The initiative called for mandatory driver assistance systems for heavy goods vehicles using Alpine transit routes. Following a consultation process and review, the government concluded that most trucks already meet these requirements, due to fleet modernisation.
Older vehicles without such systems are being phased out. As the initiative’s objective is already largely fulfilled, the government has deemed the implementation of the amendment unnecessary for now and will suspend its entry into force pending a parliamentary reassessment. (js)
